Maybe I'm an idiot- or I am just new to the VW scene - but what the heck is this type stuff? Type 1,2,3,4, 6.02*10e23....etc.
Well..

You are asking a very common question. When I was newer to the VW Scene, and was about 15 years old, I told someone I wanted a bus. They said, oh, a TYPE2? I was thinking, TYPE2? What the heck !
To answer your question, Type 1 is the beetle, Type 2 are the Busses, Type 3 are the notch, square and fast backs and Type 4 .. 411 & 412, Type 181 is a Thing. There is also a series of the Karmann Ghia which are called the type34's. Very Rare.

Hey Brock, I got your address from vwmag. I have a question that I hope you can answer: Will the resale price of the new beetle rise instead of falling? Are they going to be harder and harder to get? The reason I ask is this: I, too, am vw obsessed. Yesterday, my husband and I test drove a '98 beetle(red!), they were asking $18,500 for it. Last Sunday, in the paper, we saw several '98's and 2 of them had prices of $16,000 and $16,500(the others were dealer ads and didn't give prices) I told the salesman this, and he said that any new beetle selling for 16 or 16.5 had to have been wrecked and totally repainted or had to be in bad shape.(I'm no expert, but I have not seen alot of one-year-old cars that are in really bad shape) Then, the thing that worries me the most, he also said that because of the earthquake in Mexico(I guess it hit the beetle plant?)production of new beetles has halted and no newbies will be made even next year. Therefore, he said the resale price of the newbies is going to escalate and you won't be able to buy one brand new either because all of the brand new ones have already been bought up. Is this all true? I am desperate for information. I thought I would wait 6mo to a year until the prices dropped a little more, but, now I'm scared of what is going to happen. If you know anything about any of the stuff the sales guy told me, would you please e-mail me back? ilovebeetlebug@hotmail.com Thanks a bunch, Jill

Jill, From what I have seen, many people are trading their 98's in on newer ones. I personally think the NB prices will drop, especially since the US is getting populated with them like crazy. Wait at least 2-3 months before buying one, because the market on the 98's is going to go way down. Buy an older aircooled vw because it will hold its value. If you dont like working on VWS then a newer one is for you. Just wait a bit until we see how the market comes about. You may be able to save yourself another 2-3 thosand. 98 beetles with 20 + thosand miles on them will be selling for 14,500 - 15,000 in a couple of months. I guarantee it.

The best and only place I know of that sells reproduction Porshe Alloy wheels is SoCalImports. They have an Ad in VW Trends Magazine. They sell polished porshe alloy FUCHES 15x6, for around $130.00 each. I would look for an original set, but they are a bit pricy. I have been very fortunate and paid $225.00 for my set of original porshe alloys. The only disadvantage of buying orignal alloys is that you should get them polished. The orignals are much stronger, and lighter. You will also need porshe alloy lugnuts, which will be near impossible to find. I was lucky and found a guy named Vince on Ebay who had a set for $32.00. If you have to buy them from porshe, they will run you $4.50 each, and $80.00 for a set of wheel locks.
The only other website I have found that sells alloys is : www.erniesalloys.com- They are PRICY.

Hey!, I wanted to throw my problem out to you guys to see if anyone has any advice. My problem is clutch chattering. I recently built a 1776cc for my '67 conv. and it only has 3000 miles on it. The clutch shakes the car pretty violently in first gear while trying to take off. The disc, pressure plate, T/O bearing and flywheel were all brand new when I installed them with the engine. I suspect that someones greasy fingers may have touched the flywheel or something during installation. Any suggestions? Thanx!

Well...
Greasy flywheels can easily cause this. I learned this the hard way about three years ago when I replaced my clutch in an 1980 honda civic. You could also be leaking some oil from your motor in this area. I would say to take the flywheel back, or have it resurfaced. It's one of the two, grease or a bad flywheel. Also, your clutch will now have chatter marks, get a new one or the existing clutch will still chatter!
