For us Dub Freaks here in New Zealand, Easter weekend meant chucking
some clothes in the back of your dub, or in my case a Ford Laser (I hang
my head in shame) and driving it up / down to Rotorua (Central North
Island) for the weekend. ![]() Well, the weekend was a great success with 50 more VW’s participating than Initially expected. 153 in total, when I counted anyway. But there were dubs coming and leaving all day and there were also about 20 more in the parking lot that were just watching. It all stared at 1:00 on Good Friday with the official registration, which went until 6:00p.m. I believe that I was the only person there all the time from about 12:00 until 6:30! anyway, lots of VW’s came and went, and at the end of the day I heard that the cops came after the V8 fastback was doing burnout's in the parking lot! All good fun. ![]() ENGINE BLOW !! The evening was finished with Ken and I going out to the middle of nowhere with a petrol can to rescue Gary who ran out of petrol for his single cab! Anyway, the next morning I was down there about 8:00 and everyone was setting up their ride (waxing, polishing, patching up those stone chips you got on the way. |
![]() There was the countries newest bug, a ‘98 new beetle, and NZ’s oldest know n bug, a ‘47 split called pretzel. One of the coolest looking sights of the show for me was the big group of split Screen Kombi’s all lined up. Another good part of the show was the large number of oval window bugs, or even just pre-67 bugs all together, whether they be stock or custom. As the morning went on more and more dubs turned up, and I think that the largest number of VW’s at the show at one time was about 155 or so, but there would have been more than that in total over the whole day, as there were so many coming and going. One of the best dubs of the show, a green and white 21 window bus didn’t turn up until after 12:00! The custom section of the show boasted some pretty wild rides, with a V8 Type 3, a oval with a rotary engine in it, not to mention the wild paint jobs! The star of the show would have to of been Nigel’s beautiful Karmann Ghia, which was raised up 3 ft. on stilts! It took best of show, and it deserved it since it has not been driven! (Counter reads 00001)! ![]() A Row of Bugs ![]() ROW OF TYPE 3's. |
