This slick '61 vert didn't always look this good.
Back in the late '80's Reece found this run down, tired car that just screamed "clean me up". Reece drove the car in its natural and unsafe state for about a year. Next he needed to figure out exactly what he wanted to do with the car. Cal Look, Restore, etc. So after much debate, he decided to restore it with a bit of the cal look. So the project began when Reece pulled the engine and set it aside. He took the car to have the bodywork done. While the car was in the shop getting a new coat of paint, he began building the stout 1776cc powerplant. Some of the highlights include Dual Weber 44 IDF carbs for the fuel mixture, a Bosch 009 distributor for the spark, and boasting a compression ratio of 8.5:1. A Full flow filter and merged header with dual quiet packs complete the engine. The transmission remained stock with a 4.38:1 ring/pinion ratio.
Once the car was painted, a new custom wiring l
oom was installed with a custom block on the chromed aluminum firewall with a bead roll. The engine tin was powder coated and decked out with all the chrome goodies including fuel pump, dip stick, EMPI valve covers, Carb linkage and intake manifolds.
![]() Now it was time to lower the car. Reece used an adjustable front end to lose 2-1/2 inches in altitude on the front and had the swingaxle lowered 3 inches in the rear. Bilstein shocks were used in the rear and KYB's up front. Polished Centerlines with chrome caps were used all around. 15 x 4 up front and 15 x 7 in the rear. Michelin XZX 145's and 165's were the tires of choice. Reece also found some interesting and rare pieces to give the car a little restored touch. EMPI wood steering wheel, 1955 European window and door cranks, Wolfsburg hood crest and script, and chrome headlight eye lids just to name a few. Last to be completed was the interior. Reece used Grey Mercedes German cloth carpet, white vinyl door panels and gray sheepskin seat covers over the stock upholstery. Reece spent a lot of time and money on this car and it shows. Congratulations on a fine Cal-Resto bug. Reece wanted to mention that "This car eats 5.0 Mustangs and Cameros for lunch!" EDITOR:BOB FREIN @ Brock's VW Magazine Online |
