Restoration Section Technical Articles: Removing Front Seats in a bug
Brock's VW Magazine Online Feb 1999

STORY: Brock Eastman

I have recieved a number of messages this month about people having problems getting front seats out of their bug. I have taken seats in and out of a bug before, it sure can be a chore. What I would recommend doing is having your strongest friend come over. Some bugs have been sitting outside for years. When this happens rust occurs in the seat rails. Once there is rust, it is going to be a nightmare. Here are the steps below:

  • Get some WD40 and spray it in on the rails.
  • Have your BIG STRONG friend sit in the back seat.
  • You sit outside of the car, with the door open, pull the seat lever like you were going to slide it back and forth.
  • Keep the Seat Lever up, while your friend takes his feet and pushes the seat forward. This may take a while, but it should work.

  • In some cases, if the seat rails are really, really rusted, you may break the rail. If this happens you will need to have some new ones re-welded in. This could be a bit pricy. Go to your local junkyard and see if you can't find some new seat rails. If you can, torch them out. Give them to the guy who is going to weld your new seat rails in. I hope this little bit of advice will help you.
